Tool used in carpentry

Hand drills are an important tool that you will require in your work space and are a must to make and boring holes in your woodcrafts. Drills also come in varying shapes and types. It can be broadly divided into three types- Traditional drills, Impact driver, Hammer drills. The measuring tape is one of the most useful tools in woodworking and is widely available in many commercial hardware facilities.

Normally a carpenter measures twice before cutting the wood. Every woodworker has a retractable lockable measuring tape in their arsenal of tools. A coated abrasive consisting sheets of abrasive cloth or abrasive paper is known as Sandpaper or Glasspaper.

Although, the name is deceptive in the sense neither it consists of glass nor sand but they are basically abrasive materials made of aluminium oxide or silicon carbide products. It is also used for smoothening of surfaces, especially used prior to painting or wood finishing. It is in fact also used to make the surface rough at times while preparing it for gluing purposes.

The grit size should be chosen in such a way, keeping in mind the particle size. Usual case is that for better performance grit size is inversely proportional to the size of the particle. Steel square generally refers to a specific long armed square that is used for measuring various kinds of angles apart from right angles using the rafter table printed on it.

It consists of two arms one of them is long and wider arm known as blade, the other one is a shorter and narrower arm known as tongue, which forms a right angles 90 degrees.

Apart from steel, Squares also come in Aluminium and Polymers variants. This is to prevent them from rusting and is also lighter than the steel. There are four major kinds of square namely the framing square, the speed square, the try square and the combination square.

Well many artisans including carpenters, bricklayers, surveyors, millwrights or other building trade workers require a specialised instrument called spirit Level or simply a Level to check the surface of building material they are working on.

Level forms another essential tool majorly for carpenters and allows them to get horizontally or vertically perfect cuts. A specialized tool in the form of a handle called helve which is fixed with a head at the top is known as a Hammer.

It is generally used for a variety of operations like blowing an object in order to break it, driving a nail or a spike into another or to forge out the intended shape out of the building material. It is an electric handheld tool that comes in different sizes and sophistication with each type for cutting many materials such as woods, plastics amongst others. The blade is connected to a motor and held near the material to be cut to deliver the cutting action. When choosing a claw hammer, consider its weight and power.

The most popular claw hammer that carpenters use is one that weighs 20 oz. At this weight, it is easy to use to drive nails, and with enough force, it is easy to pull out nails too. Choose a claw hammer with steel or fiberglass handle for a more comfortable grip and easier use. The downside of a claw hammer with a steel or fiberglass handle is its inability to absorb vibration when driving nails.

Using it to drive nails for a period of time can cause strain to your hands. Get a claw hammer with a rubberized grip or handle for added comfort and control.

Holding a wooden handle for too long can make your palms sweaty, so it is best to wear gloves when driving or pulling out nails. The second head is the rounded end that is made of steel and is used to drive nails. Before starting a job, a carpenter uses a measuring tape. Woodworking requires precision, and it always means having an exact measurement before cutting. Invest in a tape measure that offers high accuracy when it comes to measurement.

Get an electronic tape measure that can help to measure wood pieces and a tape measure that has different measurements available such as centimeters, meters, and feet. There are tape measures that also come with millimeters in case you need it for small dimensions.

It is used in measuring with the metallic end clamped on an edge and used in taking the measurement. Many types are using different units; however, it is advisable to get a measuring tape having the meter and foot units. Drills are important in two major applications among woodworkers, i. These applications depend on the component utilized when it is being used.

The drill is simply the powerhouse, and it comes in different dimensions, speed, and power; the components are the ones to determine the action been carried out. With a drill bit, the application is in the making of holes. While with a driver, the application is in the driving of bolts and others into the wood. Level means horizontal, and plumb is vertical. Most quality levels are made of either brass-edged wood or of metal. There will be a bubble reading for level, and another one for plumb.

When the bubble is exactly between the lines, you have a level or plumb surface. You can also get string levels and laser levels, but the woodworker will use these types of levels the most often. Quality construction is vital to a good set of screwdrivers.

This gives you a lot of torque. This is accomplished with a cabinet screwdriver. Get a couple of medium Phillips head screwdrivers, and a stubby one too, for those tight places.

You may also want a ratcheting screwdriver. The next hand tool every woodworker should have is a nail set. In fact, you should have several sizes. They look like awls, and you use them to drive nail heads into the wood so they are flush or right below the surface. This allows you to fill the holes and prepare for staining or painting. The nail setter will usually have either a convex or concave surface to grip the nail better and keep it from sliding off and marring the wood. This is adjustable, and you can lock it at the angle you want to mark, making it much more time-savvy to mark multiple angles.

Shop Wood Moisture Meters. The layout square is a triangle that you can use to mark square cuts on stock. Once you measure the length of the cut, you line up the layout square with the edge of the board.

The short side will give you a straight, square cut across the end grain. You can also measure off angles with the layout square. You can even use your layout square to determine an existing angle. Just be sure to buy one made of metal. The plastic ones are not only fragile, but they also can warp, making them pretty useless.
