This is one of my all-time favorites. Some books read as though the characters are puppets, but John R. Maxim did a masterful job with characterization. Paul Bannerman is a mild-mannered, slightly sly man who also happens to be the head of a group of elite assassins. Where does the romance come in? He falls in love with Susan, a reporter and th I believe this one is out of print, but oh boy, what a book! He falls in love with Susan, a reporter and the daughter of a detective. Their relationship is sweet and sexy, and their connection sends shock waves through certain dark segments of the population.

Westport, Connecticut is one of a number of half-way towns. These are places where the most dangerous government agents are placed to acclimate them back into normal society. Homes and jobs are provided to those deemed worthy of redemption but not everyone makes the cut. Paul Bannerman decides that he won't be a pawn in this game.

Several attempts are made to dislodge this group but no one who tries returns alive. Westport becomes a very low-crime place to live, although there have been a suspicious numbers of accidents and suicides. Bad neighbors have a way of dying.
A newspaper reporter decides to investigate this trend and comes to the attention of Bannerman. Against all odds, a romance blooms between this odd couple. I first read this book back in the late 80's. While the technology has changed, the plot is still timely.
The second time through I paid more attention to Lesko and his conversations with his dead partner. Dreams or a ghost? If one goes to used book stores on a regular basis, take a moment to look for this. It's worth the read. There are other books in the series, but as I recall they weren't This was a reread for me.

I recently ran across an old list of books I loved and hated in the late 80's and early 90's. Though I have no memory of this novel, it is rated therein at 5-stars for me. Seeing as how I have no memory of it, I must downgrade to 4-stars until I've had a chance to hunt down a copy and have another go at it.

You'll need to please a lot of different types of Read more Introducing Paul Bannerman as the lead protagonist for the first time, it manages to let the audience know who he is and what sort of trouble he will be facing. The book also manages to bring in a lot of the subsidiary characters as well, such as the many other ex-assassins and special operatives that are residing in the town of Westport, Conneticut.
The character of Paul Bannerman himself is a well defined one that has grown over the many subsequent books to come in this particular series.
With a wide set of skills accrued during his lifetime an operative specially trained, there is no job too small for him and no challenge too big to deal with.
Will he be able to survive the contract placed upon his head? Can he learn who is out to get him and stop them from doing so leaving him to live the quiet life? What will become of him as he puts into practice the Bannerman solution? Following on from the last, this sequel was first published in , October the 1st, as it continued directly on from the previous events continuing the story of Paul Bannerman.
Still set in Westport, Conneticut, it already has the overall premise set-up from before, so it goes about further establishing the character along with his past. Creating the tone for what was to come, it manages to establish the style and ambiance, building upon the tone of Westport and the community of retired assassins and special operatives living within.
All this helps to elaborate upon who he is and what his current predicament is, as he once again becomes the reluctant hero of another action-packed adventure. Having seen it all before though, he is world-weary now, having to endure it more than anything in what is ostensibly a struggle to survive despite the odds stacked against him.
This time the community is subject to governmental test program that aims to eradicate such groups of people through a system of strategic assassinations. Not only that but he has only gone and fallen in love with Susan Lesko, the daughter of legendary cop from New York, a detail which could be used against him as her life is threatened, sending him into a pure rage.
Will he be able to survive the forces that threaten their lives? Can he eradicate all the threats out against him? What will become of him as he finds what becomes of the Bannerman effect? Whilst this particularly distinctive series definitely has potential to carry on, along with its ability to transfer over to the big-screen, only time will tell what lies in store for it yet.
Using a both visual and arresting style the books lend themselves to a high-octane and fast-paced tone that carries itself well throughout the series. This is something John R. Over the years he has gone onto create a number of other series as well, but it is this one for which many to find his best, creating a unique character that many are able to relate to. Also in eBook format, they continue their lifespan today, gaining readers both young and old with their stories of excitement and intrigue tantalizing their audience.
This is something which shall continue on into the future leaving behind it a legacy that manages to capture the attention of many, something which will carry on for many years to come yet.
